MathFest 2009: Bigger & Better Than Ever!

Please join us Thursday, November 12th at the Rainier Community Center for the ultimate math night experience. This year you will be mezmerized by the Mathemagic Mind Reader, captivated by the Function Machine and charmed by the Science Poser. It's math like you have never seen before!

Posters and flyers will be coming your way in the next two weeks. Please help us recruit families to attend by talking up the event with your school community. The festivities begin at 5:00 PM with a light dinner and game play. Beginning at 7:30, prizes (including the much anticipated winner of the Math Spirit Trophy) are awarded. Take the night off and bring the kids to this FUN Family event!

Mental Math with Dave

Fingers (K-5th)

This is a fast game and good for math warm-ups or transition times.

  • Students pair off and hold one hand behind their back and may extend anything from 0 to 5 fingers.
  • They reveal the number of fingers at the teacher’s signal.
  • Whoever correctly states the sum of the fingers first wins the round.

TIP: For primary students, use addition in groupings up to 4 students. Only 2 students work using subtraction. For intermediate students, you can multiply the fingers.

YOU SPOKE. WE LISTENED.
EIM Develops Parent Workshop: MathWays

Last Spring, many teachers responded to EIM’s year end survey with a resounding need for more parent education opportunities in math instruction. As a result of the survey, EIM developed a parent workshop this summer that was piloted this fall in Lake City and the Rainier Valley. The workshop is a combination of homework help, available resources for parents and games that reinforce math facts and problem solving strategies.

No matter our audience, parents, teachers, students or corporate sponsors, there has been a universal response to our approach to math—IT’S FUN! More MathWays workshops are planned for winter of 2010. Stay tuned for dates and details.
